Stars and Stripes 9-27-1971 Anarchist Wounds 2 Cops in Southern Germany (Stars and Stripes)
Stars and Stripes covers a shootout in Freiburg where Baader-Meinhof group member Holger Meins shot and wounded two police officers before escaping with his girlfriend and fellow group member Margrit Schiller. The article is interesting because it betrays a sexism prevalent in the times: Meins is clearly the deadly anarchist while Schiller is relegated almost to bystander status. Within a month Schiller herself would be in custody after murdering a police officer.
As with many English-language articles of the era, the article misspells Ulrike Meinhof’s name as “Meinhoff.”
